Research Interests:

Abby Kavner investigates how the physical and chemical properties of materials that comprise the Earth and planets govern their formation, evolution, and current state. I have several projects investigating material properties at extreme conditions of high pressure and temperature that either directly relate to studies of materials at the nano-scale, or leverage approaches developed by nano-/micro-fabrication technologies to make better measurements. The following is a list of my currently funded projects with overlaps in nanoscience. 1. Study of chemical behavior at solid/fluid reactive interfaces at high pressure and temperature conditions. (UC/LANL) 2. Study of stable isotope behavior at a redox-active interface (DOE/BES) 3. Study of the mechanical behavior of ultrahard materials and microcomposite materials at extreme conditions. (DOE/NNSA) 4. Study of the thermal evolution of the Earth's interior, including thermal conductivity of minerals at high pressures and temperatures. (NSF/EAR)
