Technical Research Interest:

Maynard and her research group integrate synthetic polymers with biologically-derived molecules, such as peptides, proteins, and sugars, to prepare materials for applications in human medicine and nanotechnology. Specifically, polymer functionality and architecture are manipulated using controlled radical polymerization to prepare universal polymer scaffolds. Reaction of these scaffolds with amino acids and peptides to produce ligands that function as specific antagonists of cellsurface receptors are being pursued. Potential applications of the polymeric drugs include cancer treatment. Controlled radical polymerization is also used to synthesize peptide- and proteinpolymer conjugates. Polymer bioconjugates are important commercial therapeutics and arguably will become valuable building blocks of nanostructured materials. It is known that having well-defined conjugates with a specific number of monodisperse polymer chains is critical for resultant conjugate properties including bioactivity and self assembly. Maynard's group explores several new strategies to synthesize materials of this description. In addition, protein mico- and nanoarrays are prepared using reactive polymer surfaces. These surfaces allow for the conjugation of active biomolecules in specific conformations. These materials may be useful in sensors for cancer and also as biomaterial coatings to enhance cell adhesion.

Heather D. Maynard received a B.S. with Honors in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992 and her Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in the summer of 2000. She then moved to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), where from 2000-2002 she was an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow. Dr. Maynard joined the UCLA faculty as an Assistant Professor in August 2002 as the first Howard Reiss Career Development Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and as a member of the California NanoSystems Institute. She is now a full Professor and Director of the Chemistry Biology Interface Training Program. Since arriving at UCLA, Maynard has given 165 invited lectures. Maynard has been selected as an Outstanding Emerging Investigator by the Journal of Materials Chemistry and has received the Amgen New Faculty Award, NSF Career Award, Seaborg Award for Outstanding Research, the Hanson-Dow Award for Excellence in Teaching, and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. Maynard is a Leverhulme, Kavli Frontiers, and Royal Society of Chemistry Fellow. Maynard is on the editorial board of Polymer Chemistry and the editorial advisory boards of Macromolecules, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, J. of Polymer Chemistry, Langmuir, Macromolecular Biosciences, Bioconjugate Chemistry, and Biomacromolecules. Her research interests focus on combining polymers with biomolecules for applications in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and medicine.
